Tree Cavity Surgery

Cavity Repair and Treatment in The Woodlands Houston Galveston, TX Areas

Tree cavity surgery is a process partly involving the removal of damaged or decayed wood from cavity, or wound, within a tree.   In many cases, the natural functions of the tree can take care of this on its own. A tree doesn't heal, persay, it grows callus tissue around the would and shuts the damaged section off from the rest of the tree. This process is called compartmentalization. This type of cavity repair may be necessary if the trunk or a limb has an open wound that the tree is having a difficult time of compartmentalizing, or closing off, on its own. The damaged wood can weaken the structure of the tree and could lead to fracturing. The cavity repair that we provide will create a backbone for the wound and help it to perform that natural process when needed.

The first step in tree cavity surgery is for one of our Arborists to assess the extent of the damage and determine the best course of action. If the cavity is small and the tree is otherwise healthy, the damaged wood may be removed and the area treated with an artificial bark/antibiotic ointment to prevent further decay. If the cavity is larger or the tree is in poor health, more extensive surgery may be required.

During the surgery, our plant health care technician will remove any loose or decayed wood from the cavity using specialized tools such as a chisel or rotary cutter. We may also remove any insects, water or fungus that are present in the cavity. Once the cavity has been cleaned out, your Arborist will fill the space with a treated foam and a antibiotic sealant to prevent further decay and allow the tree to strengthen its structure.

It is important to note that tree cavity surgery is a complex and time-consuming process, and it is not always successful. The success of the surgery depends on a proper initial assessment, correct tools and products and the skill of the Arborist. With the advantage of our qualified and experienced Aggie Former Student tree doctor and with proper care and maintenance, a tree that has undergone cavity surgery can go on to live a long and healthy life.

Overall, when it's necessary, tree cavity surgery is an important service we specialize in at Tree PhD Urban Forestry that can help to preserve the health and structural integrity of the trees on your commercial or residential properties. If you have a tree with a large cavity or other damage, it is important to have it evaluated by one of our qualified arborists to determine the best course of action.
